Ad text

I lost four and a half stone in eleven months, with help. Nobody warned me about the skin. I found out properly at half seven on a Tuesday in June, in a WhatsApp group, on a phone I was holding in my own kitchen. I am forty four. I have two boys and a job I like and for eleven months I did everything right and it worked. My knees stopped hurting on the stairs. I came off one tablet. I got into a size twelve dress for the first time since I was twenty seven and I stood in the shop and cried a bit, the good kind. What nobody said is that the inside of my thighs would not come with me. It is the bit right at the top, where they meet. When I stand still it is fine. When I walk it moves, half a second after I do, like it belongs to somebody slightly behind me. When I sit down and cross my legs it folds over on itself. My friend Dawn says she cannot see it. Dawn is lying, kindly. So here is what I did about it, which is almost nothing, because I did not know there was anything to do. I waited. Two different people told me it would catch up on its own, so I gave it fourteen months, and nothing was holding it up for a single day of those fourteen months. I put body butter on twice a day for a whole winter, on the outside of skin that was loose three layers down. I did squats and I walked ten thousand steps, which built the thing under the skin and did nothing to the skin lying over it. I bought the size twelve dress thinking smaller clothes would sort it out, and it did sort it out, right up until I sat down. And then, without really deciding to, I started tensing my leg every time I sat, holding it in, all day, at my desk, in the car, at the table. Nobody can hold themselves in for a whole day. I was just very tired by six. Then the assembly. It was the boys' leavers' assembly in June, hot, and I wore the size twelve dress because I had earned it. Somebody took a photo of a group of us on the field afterwards and put it in the class group at half seven that night, and I was sat on the low wall at the edge of it with my legs crossed. I have looked at that photo more times than I want to write down. Nobody said anything. Nobody was unkind. It is just there now, in a group of thirty people, and I cannot take it out, and I know exactly which two inches of it I look at every time. The dress needed taking up anyway, so that Saturday I took it to Angela, who does alterations above the dry cleaners and has been taking my mother's things in and out for about twenty years. She has fitted more women than any doctor I have ever met. She had me stand on the box while she pinned the hem, and she asked how much I had lost, and I told her, and then I said something I had not said out loud to anybody, which was that I did not really enjoy it as much as I thought I would. She stopped pinning and she said, is it the tops of your legs. I said how do you know. She said everybody. She said skin is a fabric. It was stretched over something for a long time and it held that shape, and when the thing underneath goes quickly, the fabric does not shrink back at the same speed. It just hangs where there is nothing to hold it. And she said the reason it looks worse at teatime than it does in the morning is that with less underneath it, fluid settles lower down the leg as the day goes on, so by six o'clock the leg is both slacker and heavier than it was at nine. Which is the hour I was always most likely to be looked at. Then she said the thing I have now said to three different women. She said, you have worn a bra since you were thirteen. Have you ever once thought you were lazy for needing one. Nobody exercises their way out of needing a bra. It was never a discipline thing. It is a holding thing, and skin is exactly the same. And she said a bra is not the same tightness the whole way round either. It is firmest where the weight actually sits and easier where it does not, and that is the only reason it works instead of just squashing you. I said so what is that for legs. She said graduated compression. Firmest at the ankle and easing as it goes up, so the leg has one direction to move in instead of nowhere. She said that is what gets you the +30% circulation. And she said the steady support, plus the fact that you keep moving normally in them all day, is what helps boost collagen production, which is the thing that gives skin its firmness in the first place. She wrote a name on the back of my ticket. CelluMove. She said get the graduated ones, not just the tight ones, most of them are just tight. I want to be honest about what happened next, because I am wary of these stories myself. I did not have an instant transformation. I have worn them nearly every day for a month. My sagging legs are not instantly back to how they were and I am not going to pretend they are. But after a few more months of wear, I could finally look at myself in the mirror and say that my legs are back. They felt firmer and smoother. I wore shorts in the garden in August. Not out, not yet, just the garden. But I did it without thinking about it first, and eight months ago I was planning my clothes around two inches less of skin. If you are somewhere in the middle of this and you are waiting for it to catch up, that is the bit I would say something about. I waited fourteen months because two people told me to, and nothing was holding it for any of them, and I do not think anyone was being unhelpful on purpose. Nobody had told them either. They are doing buy one get one free at the minute, which is how I ended up with two pairs, one on and one in the wash. I got the size wrong and swapping it cost me nothing. There is another assembly in July. I am not going to sit on the wall. https://cellumove.com/products/3d™-leggings-sculpt-smooth-1
