Heads up guys!! If you use AI mockups with people on Etsy… this is something you’ll want to pay attention to. New York recently passed a new AI advertising law focused on AI-generated humans (“synthetic performers”) used in advertising and promotional content. The law goes into effect: June 9, 2026. Here’s the important part for Etsy sellers: This could affect mockups, social media promotions, ads, thumbnails, videos, and AI-generated models used in marketing. Some practical things sellers should start thinking about: • Disclosing AI-generated humans in promotional images/videos • Double checking mockups purchased from creators • Updating AI mockup/template listings • Making sure Etsy’s “How it’s made” section is filled out properly • Adding AI disclosure language to listing descriptions when applicable If you SELL AI mockups/templates: This is especially important for you. You may want to: ✔ Clearly disclose AI-generated people/images ✔ Offer pre-labeled mockups for customers ✔ Update instructions/templates to help buyers stay compliant One important thing: Lawyers are still parsing this law out and interpretation is still evolving — especially around marketplace listings vs paid ads/promotional content. Right now, paid ads and promotional use cases appear to be the clearest focus. The safest approach? ✔ Be transparent ✔ Label AI-generated humans in ads/mockups ✔ Update your listings/templates now instead of scrambling later I’ll keep sharing updates as we learn more. This isn’t intended as legal advice. This post is for educational/informational purposes only.
