"You left first, Katie." Rafe Cameron said it as he tied off a dock line on his family's boat. I had been back on Kildare Island for less than an hour. I had not even unpacked my duffel bag yet. My twin brother Topper drove me straight to the Cameron house for a boat ride before sunset. His sister Sarah was there too. They both walked up to the house to get drinks and left Rafe and me alone on the dock. Rafe and I grew up next door to each other on Figure Eight. We were best friends our whole lives. Everyone in our families acted like we were obviously going to date eventually. Then last August, I packed my car to go to UNC Chapel Hill for my freshman year. Rafe skipped my goodbye party. He did not show up, he did not call, and he never said goodbye. I spent my first semester texting him every Sunday night. I asked about his family, about his boat, and about his life. I sent him photos of campus and told him when I felt lonely. He never replied. Not once. After Christmas break, I finally stopped texting him. Nine months of silence made me feel like our whole friendship was a lie I made up in my head. When I walked down the dock today, I wanted an explanation. I asked him why he stopped talking to me the second I packed my bags. I expected him to act awkward or say he got busy. Instead, he stood up from the cleat and looked right at me. He blamed me for moving four hours away for college. He said leaving made me the one who abandoned him. I told him that made no sense. Going to college was normal. It did not mean I abandoned anyone. I said, "I texted you every single week, Rafe. You could have answered my calls. You chose to ignore me." He did not apologize. He looked angry. He said leaving the island meant I wanted a new life without him, so he let me have it. Hearing him say that made me furious. I cried in my dorm room for months because I thought he hated me. I spent all year feeling sick and rejected, and now he was standing on the dock acting like he was the victim. Part of me wanted to hurt him as much as he hurt me. Part of me still wanted him to step forward and tell me he missed me. I hated myself for wanting that. I told him he was a coward. I told him ignoring my messages was just an easy way to avoid making an effort. Rafe pulled his phone out of his pocket and dropped it on the dock planks between us. He glared at me, breathing hard. "I kept every text you sent. I didn't delete one." You decide what happens next. #interactivestory #sagaland
