"Stop running away from me, Kaylee." Garrett said it as he blocked the exit doors of the empty campus gym. He was breathing hard. His hair was damp from the shower, and he had his hockey duffel slung over his shoulder. He had run across campus from the rink just to catch me before I left. Three weeks ago, I stopped answering his calls. I skipped our Sunday breakfasts. Yesterday, I ran down a stairwell because I saw him walking into the science hall. Now he stood between me and the parking lot, looking furious and confused. Garrett and I have been best friends since seventh grade. We grew up together. When his dad screamed at him about hockey, Garrett climbed through my bedroom window to get away. When he got scouted for college, I was the first person he called. We had three rules: never go to sleep mad, tell the truth no matter what, and always go to the diner together after his games. I broke the honesty rule four years ago. That was when I realized I loved him. I never told him. Garrett was the campus hockey star, heading to the NHL draft, and I was his best friend. I convinced myself that keeping our friendship was better than risking it. If I told him and he did not feel the same way, I would lose him. So I stayed quiet. I cheered for him at every game, and I listened to him talk about girls he casually dated. Then, two months ago, he started dating Hannah. Hannah is nice. She is smart and funny, and she treats him well. I could not even hate her. But three weeks ago, after a home game, Garrett brought Hannah to our diner. That diner was our private ritual for eight years. We always sat in the same booth and ordered pancakes. That night, Hannah sat next to him. Garrett put his arm around her. He laughed with her, and he fed her fries from his plate. Sitting across from them was miserable. I had to smile and pretend I was happy, but I felt sick with jealousy. I knew right then that I could not keep doing this. I could not sit across from him and watch him love another girl. So I cut him off. It was cowardly, but I wanted to protect myself. I stopped answering his calls. I made up excuses about my premed classes and gymnastics practice. I hoped that if I stayed away long enough, my feelings for him would go away. Instead, Garrett panicked. To him, his lifelong best friend had suddenly vanished for no reason. "You haven't answered a single text in three weeks," Garrett said. He took a step toward me. "Logan told me you ran down the stairs yesterday to get away from me. What did I do, Kaylee? Did I say something to piss you off?" He sounded hurt. He looked at me like he genuinely could not understand. That made it harder. He had no idea what was wrong because he had never looked at me as anything more than a friend. "You didn't do anything," I said. I tightened my grip on my gym bag. "I've just been busy. I have classes and practice." "Don't lie to me," he said. "We have a no-bullshit rule. You're never too busy for me. You sat in a freezing rink with a sprained ankle just to drive me home after a game. Now you won't even look at me." "Things change," I said. "We're seniors now." "We don't change," he said. He stepped closer. "You're my person. You've always been my person. If I messed up, tell me so I can fix it. Don't just shut me out." I almost cried. I hated that. He wanted to fix our friendship, but the friendship was already broken. If I gave in, I would have to be around him and Hannah. I would have to watch them together and pretend it did not hurt. I looked away and tried to walk past him toward the doors. Garrett grabs the strap of my gym bag to stop me from leaving. He looks at me, desperate, and asks why I am throwing away ten years of friendship. You decide what happens next. #interactivestory #sagaland
