Tadanori Yokoo is Japan’s undisputed maestro of psychedelic pop art—where ukiyo-e meets day-glow rebellion. Some of the silkscreens in this carousel Yakuza Films: One Movement of Post-War Japanese Cinema (1968) Takarazuka / Grand Revue – “The Fairies Who Sell Dreams” (1965) Chrome Hearts (1997) Man-Powered Plane – Solomon, Tenjō Sajiki (1970) The Hunchback of Aomori Prefecture (1966) John Silver Continued (1968) Yuhi Shosetsu (1968) John Silver – Love in Shinjuku (1967) Diary of a Shinjuku Burglar (1968) Hijikata and the Japanese (2007) — signed, limited edition Why Yokoo’s silkscreens matter Pop art’s credo—“a descent into the everyday”—is on full display here. Yokoo raided post-war Japan’s visual vernacular (Takarazuka diva portraits, tabloid headlines, lucky-charm motifs) and fused it with Day-Glo psychedelia and ukiyo-e composition. Silkscreen was the perfect vehicle: 1. Economical & subcultural (c. 1965) – tiny runs of ~100 copies made silkscreen cheaper than offset, ideal for avant-garde circulation. 2. Deliberately “primitive” – flat, unshaded colour blocks echo woodblock prints and give each sheet a tactile, hand-pulled presence. 3. Artistically strategic – choosing silkscreen let Yokoo blur high art, agit-prop and pop ephemera, propelling him into MoMA’s 1968 landmark show Word and Image. Japan Poster Shop has spent decades hunting these originals—assembling what may be the most complete Yokoo archive outside institutional collections. Takarazuka / Grand Revue alone is a museum-grade treasure from his formative 1960s period. Swipe through, marvel, and DM for acquisition details—these electrifying sheets rarely surface twice. #TadanoriYokoo #横尾忠則 #JapanesePopArt #Silkscreen #PsychedelicArt #PostWarJapan #VintagePosters #PopArtJapan #UltraRare #JapanPosterShop #CollectorGrade #ArtHistory #MoMAPastMasters
