"Put the leather down, Princess." Colt Vance stood in the tack room doorway as I held my saddle cinch under the bare bulb. Ten hours ago, he humiliated me in front of the other cowhands. It was dawn roll call. I was struggling to saddle my horse, and my cinch strap was cracked and loose. Colt walked over, yanked the strap until the horse stepped sideways, and laughed out loud. He told the crew that my father was running a daycare now. Then he looked right at me and said I wouldn't last two weeks on this ranch before I packed my bags. I don't have anywhere to pack for. My mother blew through our money in the city and left with her boyfriend three months ago. I showed up at my father's ranch with one heavy suitcase and sneakers that were ruined by noon. My dad, Frank, was mostly absent when I was growing up. He gave me a room, and he is good to me, but I refuse to stay here as a helpless guest. I want to pull my weight. I want to earn my place. Colt calling me useless in front of the men made me furious. After dinner, I came back to the barn alone. I brought a tub of saddle soap and an old rag. I planned to scrub that dry strap until it was safe enough to ride tomorrow morning. I didn't want to give Colt another chance to laugh at me. When I lifted my saddle off the rack, the old cinch was gone. Someone had cut away the cracked leather and replaced it with a clean, oiled strap. The stirrup leathers had new holes punched into them, set exactly to my height. Only one person on the ranch uses that dark leather oil. "I said put it down," Colt said from the doorway. "You fixed this," I said. "You replaced the cinch and reset the stirrups." Colt stands in the doorway with his arms crossed. He says he only fixed my saddle so he wouldn't have to drag my dead body off the ridge. I look down at the fresh leather strap, then look right at him. You decide what happens next. #interactivestory #sagaland
