Yesterday at the loom in Chanderi I watched the weaver pass the shuttle. The warp was silk, the weft was cotton, the count so fine the fabric weighed almost nothing in my hand. Each butti on this Chanderi Silk Saree is placed by a separate weft thread, woven in by hand, one motif and then the next, then the next. The body is sheer enough to slide through a wedding ring. The zari is the only weight you feel. It belongs to the woman who notices the difference between woven and printed before she notices the price.
