Three months ago, I was holding my boy’s head in my hands while he lay on that cold hospital pillow. He wasn’t waking up yet. His tongue was dry. His breathing shallow. The vet kept saying “it’s arthritis progression, it’s normal for his age.” But nothing about this felt normal. Two weeks before that day, he’d stopped greeting me at the door. Then the limping got worse. Then the back legs started trembling a little after walks. Then one morning… he just didn’t get up. I thought it was “just stiffness.” But when a Golden stops moving, stops asking for food, stops caring about toys… your heart knows something else is happening. I barely slept. Spent hours every night rubbing his hips, Googling emergencies, reading stories on Golden groups of people who ignored the early signs until it was too late. And then came the moment that broke me. He tried to stand, but his back legs slid out from under him, like he’d forgotten how his own body worked. He looked at me ashamed, like he thought it was his fault. I carried him to the car. My hands were shaking so bad I could barely buckle him in. At the hospital, the vet ran tests. Said the same things everyone says: “Arthritis flares happen.” “Some dogs decline quickly.” “Just keep him comfortable.” I stared at my dog with wires taped to his fur. Comfortable? He was barely conscious. I felt like I’d failed him. Like I waited too long. Like I missed something important. That night, when he came home still groggy, I cried on the kitchen floor for an hour. I knew pain meds weren’t fixing anything. I knew “rest and anti inflammatories” weren’t reversing whatever was happening in his joints. I didn’t want him doped up. I wanted him back. So I did what every terrified dog parent does. I stayed up until 3am reading everything I could find from owners who’d been there. That’s when I kept seeing people mention something I’d always ignored because it sounded too simple. Daily red light therapy. I rolled my eyes at it at first, like everyone does. How could “a little pad that glows red” do anything for a dog who couldn’t walk? But the comments were impossible to ignore. Goldens who went from barely walking to trotting again. Older dogs who stopped doing the “bunny hop” walk. People saying “I wish I had started this earlier.” So I tried it. Ten minutes a day. While he napped. In the quiet spot next to the couch where he always felt safest. The first week… nothing dramatic. Maybe a tiny bit less stiffness, but I didn’t trust it yet. Week two… he started standing on his own again. Slow. Wobbly. But standing. Week three… he walked to the door when I grabbed the leash. It wasn’t perfect, but it was something. A spark. Week four… he did something I hadn’t seen in months. He brought me his toy. Just placed it at my feet and looked up like he used to when he was young. I swear I almost cried again, but this time from relief. Today… He’s not a puppy. He still has senior days. But he’s moving. He’s comfortable. He’s present. He’s himself. And that hospital photo… That horrible moment that felt like the beginning of goodbye… Now it reminds me something else: Dogs give you signs. Little ones first. Then big ones. And if you act early, you can change the whole trajectory. If your dog is slowing down… If the back legs are getting shaky… If they’ve started struggling on hardwood floors… If they hesitate before getting up… Please don’t ignore it.
