Most moms of adult children that struggle with addiction don’t realize that there is a specific approach to help their families go from ‘chaos’ to ‘calm’ that therapy and books don’t teach. I have helped thousands of moms who have adult children that struggle with addiction and other mind diseases. And while every story is unique, there’s one thing I can say for sure. When it comes to parenting someone that struggles with addiction, moms are at their wits end. They’ve tried it all. But at this point, they don’t have time to arrange another therapy session. Or read another self-help book. Or listen to one more piece of advice from their “well-meaning” friends and family. Because unless you’ve lived it, you’ll never truly understand. Nothing Works. In fact, anytime they try to help, things seem to get worse! Trust me, I get it. My own adult sons have struggled with addiction. So I know what it’s like to be completely misunderstood when you’re just trying to help your child get better. I was completely consumed by what to say and do. And eventually, right when I was ready to give up hope… I received some very specific guidance from a professional that changed my life (and my son’s). This guidance is what helped me realize WHY everything I had tried up to this point wasn’t working. What I finally realized was following my “maternal instincts” when parenting an adult child with an addiction or mind disease actually does the opposite of helping. It makes things worse. Because here’s the thing, you can NOT change your child’s behavior. No matter how hard you try. Which is why most advice out there actually fuels the fire of addiction. Like when I was told that the way to help my son was to let him “hit rock bottom.” Which involved him spiraling out of control and taking the entire family down with him in the process. This advice is like pouring gasoline on the fire. It doesn’t work the way most think it will. Instead, you need to smother the disease. Extinguish the flame. Which is why I call my method the “Smothering Strategy” The thing is, you have to stay out of your child’s way so they can focus on their own road to recovery. And ultimately you protect yourself in the process. Let me be the first to tell you that change IS possible. I see it everyday. If nothing you’ve tried has worked, now is the best time to start using the smothering strategy. I’m teaching all about how this works in my free workshop.
