I'm 8 years old. When I get home from school, Mom hugs me. She gives me a snack, and lets me have time to unwind before asking me questions. She usually sends me outside to play after I'm done my snack. I like shooting hoops with my basketball. It helps me unwind. Then, at 4:30pm, she tells me it's ok for me to have some screen time until dinner. My brothers and I like to play MarioKart or we watch Pokémon. We're not allowed to play handheld devices, or have any screens in our room. Around 5:15pm we have an early dinner. We all go around the table and share our rose, bud, and thorn of the day. Even my parents share theirs. I like hearing their stories. After dinner, it's my brothers' and my job to clean the dishes. We're ages 6, 8, and 10. Our parents say that's old enough to learn how to tidy the dinner table. We can't move on with our night until this is done. Some nights we have extra-curriculars. It's a bit chaotic at times, but it's ok. If we don't, my parents usually tell us to go back outside again. We play, bike, run around, and hang out until it's bedtime. Bedtime is around the same time every night. My parents are pretty strict about this. I'm allowed to read in bed for a bit. My parents don't really let us use screens. Except for one thing. Every night after dinner, my mom and I do this thing called Legends. It's a confidence app. We do a little lesson together, like 5 minutes. It's my favorite part of the day because it's just me and my mom. I used to say horrible things about myself. I didn't know why. But this really helped. It's also really, really fun. It makes me feel more confident, even when I mess up. This has been my routine for as long as I can remember. At first I thought it was gonna be a school thing. Like homework. But we learn about people who did really hard stuff, and it makes me feel like I can do the same thing too. Like Muhammad Ali. He told everyone he was the greatest before he was. And Michael Jordan. He got cut from his high school team. I didn't know that. Then we do something together after the story. Like a little activity. Sometimes we have to do a confidence pose. My mom does it too and it's funny. Sometimes we draw or say things out loud. Sometimes my mom cries a little. I asked her why one time. She said it was because she didn't learn this stuff when she was a kid. That made me feel kind of sad and also kind of lucky. I think it's my favorite part of the day because it's just us. Not me and my brothers. Just me. My mom puts her phone down. She doesn't check it. She actually listens to my answers and asks me more questions. We sit on my bed and the lamp is on and it's quiet. I don't really get that any other time. Last week we did one about the voice in your head. The one that's mean to you for no reason. I told my mom I have that voice too. She said she has one. I didn't know grown-ups had it. That made me feel less weird. I think the thing I like best is we have our own words now. Like when I'm nervous before a test, she'll say "what's your phrase?" and I know what she means. Or when I mess up, she'll say "accept and reset" and we both just laugh and try again. Stuff that wouldn't make sense to anyone else. We didn't really talk like that before. Anyway. If your kid is like me you should probably try it. I don't know how the grown-up part works. But my mom said it was easy to start. She said the first week is free or something. I just know I like it and I hope we keep doing it forever.
