This is the most boring photo I've ever taken. It took me 16 months to be able to take it. A pot of pasta. Boiling. Watched by me, standing still, with both hands free. If you have a toddler, you already know this photo is science fiction. For over a year, cooking in my house was a contact sport. The second the chopping board came out, she'd materialise at my leg. Arms up. Screaming if I said "one minute, darling." I have burnt more garlic mid-pickup than I care to admit. Some nights I'd just give up and we'd have toast. Again. My camera roll from that era is all photos of her. Not because I was capturing memories. Because holding the phone up was the only thing that bought me ten seconds. Here's the list of things that didn't fix it: 🧸 New toys? Novel for one evening, invisible by the third. 📺 The TV? She'd watch from my leg. Somehow. 🍪 Snacks? Congratulations, dinner is now cancelled. 📱 The iPad? Worked, and came with a free side of guilt every night. Then another mum told me something her paediatric OT had explained, and it rewired how I saw 5pm: By dinner time, a toddler has spent the entire day being managed. Buckled, carried, told no, moved along. They've had zero say over anything. So they seize the last thing they can control, which is you. The clinging isn't about attention. It's about having one thing that's actually theirs. A toy does the work for them and loses them in minutes. A job hands the work over and holds them. 💡 So I swapped toys for work. A solid wood board with 8 real jobs on it. Latches, buckles, a light switch, laces. All the things I'd spent a year pulling her hands away from. She sat with it while this entire pot of pasta cooked. Start to finish. That was 10 weeks ago, and now the sound of my kitchen at 5pm is little clicks and zips from the living room, and water boiling.
