Fellow Goofy Newfers! I have had so many kind words and so many questions about the book, "Thor's First Day at Doggy Daycare" that I wanted to share a little bit more about the story behind the creation of the Goofy Newfy book! My wife and I had just had our daughter and our 3 year old son was going to be starting daycare soon. My son is the sweetest, kindest boy. Period. He is truly my pride and joy. And, to be frank, I was worried about him being so nice he might be bullied. Of course, at that age there really isn't "cliques" or true bullying, but rather exclusion. For example, maybe the other kids are all playing and one kid is left all alone. The impact of that, on a child at that age, I think is heartbreaking. I think all of us, at some point, have felt that awful feeling. Being left out. Being excluded. A main message I repeated to my son--and still do--is that when he is at daycare, if he sees someone sitting alone, for him to be the change. For him to go over and invite the lonely kid to play. During this time, my wife was urging me to write something. I am a prosecutor in my day job but she has always loved my writing. She is an incredibly supportive woman and urged me to use the time while I was on paternity leave to work on a book of some kind. BAM. Then it hit. I could write a children's book (probably not what my wife had meant 😅)! A book about kindness. A message and values based book sprinkled with little educational bits like colors and numbers (ex. "Before you could even count one, two, three; Thor arrived at doggy daycare barking with glee!") I wanted to write something I could read to my son that would help get the message across but without it being too on-the-nose. Enter...THOR! My big goofy newfy! I had always wanted my son to grow up with a big dog and researched for countless hours on dogs that met my necessary criteria: kind, good with small children, not super high energy, good with other pets, smart...and I discovered the Newfoundland breed! The most amazing breed I'd ever read about. I looked and looked around until I found our Thor! The cutest puppy with salt and pepper legs and the floofiest body ever. I fell in love instantly. Thor being the main character was PERFECT. My big ole goofy newfy is the sweetest dog and SO friendly. When he went to Doggy daycare the first time he played with small dogs, big dogs, tired dogs, old dogs, young dogs...ALL the dogs haha. So I decided that would be the story! My guidepost was Aesops Fables meets Disney. Something with good messages and values but packaged in a fun, bright, happy, colorful story. It took FOREVER to write because I wanted the rhyming to be perfect, the story to be enjoyable, and the message to be clear! Now you know how Thor, our Goofy Newfy became the main character in what will be a series where each book helps a child learn or deal with or find comfort in facing a new situation! Kindness, friendship, empathy, compassion...all things we want our children to embrace! But to get the book out there, to get the message to spread, that requires all of you. If I had Scholastic behind me it'd be one thing but it is just me and all of you. So please keep on sharing, commenting, liking, following, and purchasing! Let's get this book up on the charts!
