You Are Not Your Brain (First Poem of the Series: You Are the Universe Becoming Aware of Itself) By Sam Yau Foreword to the Series These three poems explore a single, radical idea: that you are not a separate observer looking out at a dead universe, but the living universe looking back through your eyes. These poems are poetic invitations—to feel and ponder—how your life might change when you realize you are already connected to cosmic consciousness. I. Stardust Counting Itself You are seven octillion atoms, a seven followed by twenty‑seven zeros, of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, a little sulfur and phosphorus, trace metals from the bones of stars. They attract and repel. They bond and break. They vibrate with thermal whispers and obey the indifferent law of physics. Not one of them has any idea it is part of a person. An atom in your brain once sat, anonymous, inside a rock on a forgotten shore, dissolved, wandered a river, became plankton, fish, bird, soil, climbed a stem into a leaf, became your salad, slipped into blood, and now participates in a thought about atoms. Tomorrow it may be exhaled, rejoin the sky, forget you utterly. Matter flows through you like a river through a whirlpool. The water is never the same. The pattern persists. Over seven years almost every atom in you is replaced, yet you say, without hesitation, “I am still myself.” So identity is not in the atoms. It is in how they dance, in the pattern, in the ongoing grammar of a process that calls itself “I.” You are not a thing. You are a happening, a verb mistaken for a noun. Think of a fire: flames licking air in your fireplace are not a solid object but a pattern of reactions— wood to ash, carbon to light— holding a shape as the fuel ceaselessly changes. So too with you: atoms enter, glow briefly as “my body,” then leave, while the story, somehow, goes on. You are a universe of atoms, and an atom in the universe, standing at the shore of its own body, wondering at wondering.
