The Germany 'deal' is not a secured contract but only a non-binding "HoA" for a SMALL amount of LNG: Three things to know: A) Even if it was fulfilled Germany has only agreed to buy a SMALL fraction of the LNG that Ksi Lisims LNG would need to export to be viable. B) This HoA for a very small amount actually casts doubt on the project's viability and speaks to a desperation to make the project look attractive. It’s hype to try and attract private sector interest that has not appeared yet (for good reason). C) The Federal Government is trying to find ways to waste taxpayer money on this U.S.-owned project with ties to the U.S. Administration, because the private sector case is so poor. As Anil Hira writes in The Globe and Mail: "[Ksi Lisims LNG] has not yet attracted the many billions in private investment needed. This deep shortfall, along with numerous other hurdles along the way, raises the likelihood the federal government becomes the investor of last resort, putting Canadians on the hook... Already, almost $4-billion in federal and provincial government funding has been committed to LNG development. LNG Canada, also in B.C., received a $40-billion capital investment, including the $14.5-billion Coastal GasLink pipeline that cost more than twice the original estimate and took seven years to get from final investment decision to operations. The same financial uncertainties hold true for Ksi Lisims. The project is estimated to cost $26-billion, nearly three times the initial estimate. Proponents anticipated making a final investment decision in early 2026, after missing the 2025 target. But the turmoil in the Middle East is not expected to translate into enough interest from LNG buyers." As Richard Brooks writes on Bluesky: "Canada Infrastructure Bank has [also] been repurposed to fund risky LNG project Ksi Lisims, risking the bank's positive reputation. The wholly-owned US project is seeking taxpayer funds to move towards a final investment decision and construction." Ecojustice's recent media release notes that Ksi Lisims "raises fundamental questions around why Ottawa is considering subsidizing projects that appear unable to pull in adequate private capital."
