"It's all calories in calories out. Control your eating habits and you'll lose weight." ‎ If I hear these words again from someone who is not a female who has ever had PCOS and attempted to lose weight and failed miserably at it, I will fucking SCREAM. I already am screaming. ‎ (☝☝☝ turns out the root cause of the problem was what my metformin was trying to fix but couldn't. And the dieting was literally making it worse.) ‎ I've been fighting this since I was 19. I'm 23 now. ‎ I lived on campus in college. I was literally walking everywhere. Going to the gym every single day. Made sure I never snacked. While on metformin. ‎ And in two years I gained 41 pounds. ‎ I dropped my calories from 1,500 to 1,200 to 900 to 700. Some days I just wouldn't eat. Added berberine. Inositol. Zinc. Spearmint tea. On top of the metformin. On top of everything. ‎ Nothing. ‎ And what would infuriate me the most was waking up heavier the next morning and having people tell me I'm lazy. People who don't have this. People who eat whatever they want telling ME I'm not trying hard enough. When I'm trying harder than any of them ever could. ‎ Especially my doctor. That's who pissed me off the most. ‎ I'd go in and try to talk to her about my levels. About my metformin dose. About why nothing is working. And every time she'd pull up her screen and go "your metformin is at the right dose. Your glucose looks fine. A1C is in range. You just need to lose some weight and your PCOS symptoms will get better. Just eat less. Stop making excuses." ‎ Telling me to lose weight to improve symptoms of a condition that causes weight gain. ‎ .... ‎ But the one who really got to me was my mom. ‎ Always making the snarky comments. Always criticizing. Every time I'd walk through the door she'd look at me with this face. This condescending little smile. "Oh you've been eating good I see." ‎ At dinners she'd make my plate different than everybody else's. Salad while everyone else got real food. And she'd set it down in front of me with this look like she's doing me a favor. ‎ And there was this one night where I tried to tell her. Like really tell her. About how I've been starving myself. About how nothing is working. About how I'm doing everything and gaining weight. I just wanted her to understand. ‎ And she looked at me and said "stop blaming your PCOS for your weight gain Melissa. You're just not trying. You're probably not being honest with yourself. Your doctors are telling you you're fine. I don't know why you're trying to make this seem like it's the end of the world." ‎ I was 197 pounds. I'd just graduated college. And my own mother thought I was lying about starving myself. ‎ I went to my room that night and just broke down. Because if your own mom doesn't believe you're trying then who will. ‎ .... ‎ And by that point I'd just stopped seeing people. ‎ All my friends from college. All the girls I graduated with. I'd make plans and cancel a few days later every time. Because I'd gotten so big. I just didn't want anybody to see what I turned into. ‎ All my favorite clothes stopped fitting. Everything. I was living in leggings and oversized hoodies trying to hide. ‎ And I just started hating myself. ‎ And that's when I thought I can't keep living like this. Because no man is gonna find me attractive looking like this. I'm probably never gonna get married. My PCOS is just gonna keep getting worse because of the weight. And the weight is gonna keep getting worse because of the PCOS. And I'm stuck in this cycle forever. ‎ .... ‎ So I started researching on my own. ‎ Going through Reddit. Going through the PCOS groups. Trying to connect everything. Metformin. Insulin. Weight gain. Why nothing was working. ‎ And I kept seeing the same thing. Insulin resistance. How high insulin tells your body to store fat. How metformin is supposed to help but for a lot of women it just doesn't do enough. ‎ But it was too much information. I'm not a doctor. I couldn't make sense of half of it. ‎ So I started looking for someone who could. A doctor who actually understood PCOS. Who actually listened. ‎ And I found one. Dr. Carrie Ann. She had all these women in her reviews saying she actually listens. Women with PCOS saying their facial hair went away. Saying they finally lost weight. Stuff I'd never heard any doctor say. ‎ I booked an appointment. Got in a week later. ‎ The whole drive there I'm just thinking please. Please let her be the one who helps me. ‎ .... ‎ So I sat down and just let everything out. ‎ And she just sat there and listened. Wasn't typing on her computer. Wasn't looking at a screen. Just looking at me. ‎ And then I told her what I'd been researching. About insulin. About insulin resistance. I said I think my problem is my insulin. I think that's what's keeping the weight on. My metformin isn't doing enough. And my doctor keeps telling me my levels are fine but I know they're not. ‎ And she kind of paused. ‎ And said "have you ever gotten your thyroid tested?" ‎ And I was like what does my thyroid have to do with my PCOS. ‎ And she said "PCOS and thyroid problems are extremely connected.Has your doctor not even looked at that?" ‎ "No. Nobody has ever mentioned my thyroid." ‎ She said "that might explain why your metformin isn't working." ‎ I asked her "How are they connected. What does my thyroid have to do with my insulin and my PCOS." ‎ And she told me (word for word as I voice recorded) "your thyroid controls your liver. Your liver is what regulates insulin. And if your thyroid conversion is messed up your liver never gets the signal to do its job properly. So your liver is basically sitting there not working the way it should. And you're relying on metformin to do everything by itself. And even 10,000 milligrams of metformin could never do what your liver is supposed to be doing on its own. ‎ And she showed me a study published in the European Journal of Endocrinology. They did thyroid ultrasounds on women with PCOS. Nearly half of them had thyroid abnormalities. ‎ And I just let out this sigh. Because for the first time in four years someone told me it wasn't me. And it explained why metformin would work for some women and not the rest. All over something my doctors never tested. ‎ This is what she explained to me. ‎ Your liver makes this thing called SHBG. Think of it like a sponge. It soaks up the excess testosterone from PCOS in your blood. Grabs onto it. Deactivates it. Keeps everything under control. ‎ When the sponge is working your testosterone stays balanced. Your insulin works properly. You can actually lose weight. ‎ But your liver can't just make the sponge on its own. It needs a signal from your thyroid. That signal is a hormone called T3. ‎ So your thyroid naturally produces this hormone called T4. And your body is supposed to convert that T4 into T3. The active one. The one that tells your liver to make the sponge. ‎ But with PCOS the inflammation and insulin resistance mess with how your body converts T4. Instead of making real T3 your body starts making this broken version called reverse T3. ‎ And it gets even worse with stress. And dieting. And low calories. Every time you restrict harder your body reads that as danger and makes even more reverse T3. ‎ And reverse T3 looks just like real T3. But it doesn't work. It just blocks everything. Blocks the real T3 from getting where it needs to go. ‎ Including your liver. ‎ So your liver never gets the signal. The sponge never gets made. And the testosterone just floods your body with nothing to soak it up. ‎ More testosterone. More insulin resistance. More fat storage. More weight gain. No matter what you eat. No matter how little you eat. ‎ And metformin can't fix this. Metformin works on insulin. But it can't make the sponge. It can't clear the reverse T3. It can't send the signal to your liver. That's why it stopped working. That's why it was never going to be enough. ‎ And nobody checks for this. In four years of doctors and blood work nobody ever looked at my reverse T3. Because they only see PCOS. They only test glucose. A1C. Maybe testosterone. Nobody checks what's happening in the liver. Nobody checks why the sponge isn't being made. ‎ I was treating the symptom the entire time. The actual cause was in my thyroid. ‎ So I asked her how do I fix it. How do I clear the reverse T3. ‎ She said selenium and iodine in a 2 to 1 ratio. That's what clears the reverse T3 out so the real T3 can get through to your liver. ‎ And KSM-66 ashwagandha. Clinical grade. To calm the stress response so your body stops panicking and stops producing more reverse T3 every time you diet or restrict. ‎ Liquid form. Because with PCOS and the gut issues that come with it most pills don't absorb properly. ‎ She said this is what she recommends to all her PCOS patients with weight gain problems. ‎ .... ‎ So I went home that night and started searching. ‎ "Reverse T3 supplement." ‎ "Selenium iodine ratio PCOS." ‎ "KSM-66 ashwagandha insulin resistance." ‎ Going through the PCOS groups. The Hashimoto's groups. The hypothyroidism groups. Just trying to find something that had everything together in the right ratios. ‎ And most of what I found was just one or the other. Selenium by itself. Ashwagandha by itself. Nothing with everything together. ‎ And then I found this one thread. About selenium and thyroid conversion. And in the comments women kept mentioning the same thing. Peak Form. Over and over. ‎ Women with PCOS saying the weight finally started coming off on metformin after adding this. Like metformin finally started working once their thyroid conversion was fixed. One woman said she'd been on 1,000mg of metformin for two years and never lost a pound. Added this and dropped 7 lbs her first month eating more than she had been. ‎ Another woman. Same thing. PCOS for 6 years. Metformin did nothing. Started this and the scale moved for the first time since her diagnosis. ‎ I looked at the formula. ‎ Selenium. Iodine. 2 to 1 ratio. KSM-66 ashwagandha. Liquid. ‎ Everything Dr. Carrie Ann said. All of it. ‎ $27. ‎ I've spent thousands on berberine and inositol and gym memberships and organic food and meal prep containers and none of it worked. And this was $27. ‎ I bought it that night. ‎ .... ‎ Started taking it with my metformin. My berberine. My inositol. Everything I was already on. Didn't change anything else. Just added this. ‎ First day nothing. Scale was actually up a pound. And I thought here we go. Another thing that doesn't work. ‎ Day four the scale didn't move. Like just sat there. And when you've been gaining every single week for years the scale standing still feels like something. ‎ Week one I was down a pound. And I was eating. Not 700 calories. Not starving. Like 1,100 calories. Actual food. And the scale went down. ‎ I weighed myself like three times because I didn't believe it. ‎ Week two I was down 3 pounds. Eating 1,200 calories. More than I'd eaten in months. Scale still going down. And I woke up without dragging myself out of bed for the first time in I don't even know how long. Just opened my eyes and got up. ‎ Week three I was down 6 pounds. And I could feel something different. Like my jeans weren't cutting into me as much. The bloating around my stomach was going down. Not a lot. But enough that I noticed. ‎ Month two I was down 13 pounds. And I was eating 1,400 calories. Like real meals. Not salad bar rabbit food. Actual meals with actual carbs. And the scale kept going down. ‎ The girl at work asked me if I was doing something different because my face looked thinner. And I just kind of laughed and said I don't know. Because I didn't want to get into it. But I went to the bathroom after and looked in the mirror and she was right. The puffiness was gone. I could see my jawline. ‎ Month three I was down 21 pounds. Eating 1,500 calories. Not restricting. Not fasting. Not cutting out food groups. Just eating and living and the scale going down every week. ‎ I put on jeans I hadn't worn since before my diagnosis. Pulled them up expecting them to stop at my thighs like they always do. They didn't. They went all the way up. And they buttoned. ‎ I just stood there in my room staring at myself. In real jeans. Not leggings. Not sweats. Jeans. ‎ .... ‎ I went back to Dr. Carrie Ann and got my labs done. ‎ My insulin resistance markers had improved so as my testosterone. the first time since I started metformin. Like the metformin was finally doing what it was supposed to do. ‎ And my reverse T3 was at the bottom of the range. Basically nothing. ‎ And I just sat there looking at the number. Because in four years of doctors and blood work and metformin nobody ever tested this. Not once. And it was the thing behind everything. The reason my metformin never worked. The reason I couldn't lose weight eating 700 calories. The reason my body was in fat storage mode no matter what I did. ‎ It was right there the whole time. And nobody checked. ‎ .... ‎ I'm not saying this works for everybody. I don't know your body. I don't know your situation. ‎ But if you have PCOS and nothing is working. If you're on metformin and starving yourself and the scale won't move and your doctor keeps telling you to just eat less. ‎ Please just ask your doctor to test your reverse T3 and you thyroid levels. ‎ Because I spent 4 years thinking I was the problem. Taking metformin for it. Starving myself for it. And the whole time my liver wasn't getting the signal to do its job because of a hormone nobody was testing for. ‎ They have a 60 day guarantee so if it doesn't work you just get your money back. ‎ They sell out sometimes. Just letting you know. ‎ Here's the link if you want to try it: https://peakformnutrition.net/products/peak-form-thyroid-support-pcos ‎ I just wish someone had told me 4 years ago.
