Almost everyone thinks of the Ten Commandments as God's list of rules. A bar to clear. A standard you are always falling short of. But the Ten Commandments do not begin with a single command. They begin with a rescue, and that one detail changes everything about what the law was actually for. I have taught the Bible for years, and this is one of the most misunderstood pages in all of Scripture, sitting in plain sight on a page everyone assumes they already know. We will get to that first line. But to feel the full weight of it, you first have to see how the whole thing is built. And almost no one notices this either. The Ten Commandments were written on two stone tablets. And they fall into two distinct groups. The first group is about God. Have no other gods before Him. Do not make idols. Do not misuse His name. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. The first four commandments have nothing to do with how you treat other people. Every one of them is about your relationship with God. The second group is about people. Honor your father and mother. Do not murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not lie about your neighbor. Do not covet what belongs to someone else. The last six commandments have nothing to do with worship or ritual. Every one of them is about how you treat the people around you. Now look at the shape of it. The first tablet points up. It is about loving God. The second tablet points out. It is about loving people. Up, and then out. That is the structure carved into the stone. And it sits there, unexplained, for more than a thousand years. Until a religious lawyer tried to trap Jesus with a question. Of all the commandments, he asked, which is the greatest? Jesus answered with two. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. And love your neighbor as yourself. Then He said something remarkable. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. He had just taken the entire law of God and folded it into two commands. Love God. Love people. And those two commands are the two tablets. The first four commandments are how you love God. The last six are how you love people. Jesus did not invent a new summary out of nowhere. He revealed the structure that had been sitting in the stone the whole time. Up to God. Out to people. The shape of the Ten Commandments is the shape of the cross. But there is one more thing almost no one notices, and it is the most important of all. It is the first line. The one I told you we would come back to. Now go back to the very beginning. To the words that come before a single command. Before God says "you shall" or "you shall not," He says this. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. He identifies Himself by what He has already done. He rescued them first. By the time they reach the mountain to receive the law, they are already free. Already His people. Already carried out of slavery. And only then, to a people He had already saved, did He give the commandments. And the rescue did not just sit in the opening line. It was woven into the commandments themselves. When God commands the Sabbath, the book of Deuteronomy gives the reason. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out. The day of rest was a weekly memorial of freedom. A people who had once worked without end, without rest, without mercy, were now commanded to stop one day a week and remember they were free. Even the law to rest was a law about rescue. The law was never the way in. It was never the price of being loved by God. It was how an already rescued people were invited to live. Grace came first. With God, it always does. In all my years of teaching, the thing that helped people most was never a clever sermon. It was giving them the context first. Who wrote a book, when, why, what was happening in the world at the time, and how the pieces connect. The Ten Commandments stop being a list of rules to feel guilty about and become the structure of love itself, the moment you understand what you are actually looking at. That is true of almost every page of the Bible. The meaning is not hidden. The context is just missing. Here is the honest part.
