✨ Forgive Them, For They Know Not What They Do “Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do.” —Luke 23:34 Our own creative narratives make up our projected reality. Without God’s grace—who sacrificed His perfect Son to save us, tearing the veil to give us access to the Holy Spirit—Christ’s identity, filled with the Holy Spirit’s grace and values, would not be seen as the way to lead us back to truth. And without that, our emotions become the aim—easily persuading us to justify speaking and doing evil toward others. He was right. We make mistakes. We sin. And we easily justify seeking justice or judging—without knowing someone’s true heart. We don’t know what we do, even when we are certain that we have every right to justify it. Judas is a sobering example. He felt the weight of betraying Jesus— but instead of turning back to Him, he turned inward and was consumed by guilt. His sorrow led to death—not because grace wasn’t available, but because he didn’t receive it through repentance. That distortion we all experience is not our true identity in Christ. That is the flesh— which builds distorted truths that then form distorted identity loops through a dysregulated nervous system. Satan works through the flesh and is emotionally persuasive in distorting truth when we do not turn to Christ. That is how he enters— through the distortion we create around our identity without Christ. Being a sinner does take on a deeper understanding through this lens. We are saved from our sins. He gives us grace. But we are still called to turn toward Him. So even though we are saved by grace while still imperfect —we can remain stuck when we choose not to believe we have been made new in Christ. Sin is still missing the mark— but it is also seen here as remaining in a distorted identity that resists His grace and refuses to turn toward Him. Even though we have access to the Holy Spirit— to guide us, to build a relationship with, and to walk with Him in His will by surrendering our own— our will can be distorted by emotion, which then distorts identity. Judas did not believe he could be restored. He carried an identity rooted in guilt instead of turning toward the grace that was still available to him. That identity was formed in distortion— not truth. He didn’t have to carry it. He could have turned toward Christ to be delivered from the weight of it and redirected back to truth. The Holy Spirit lifts the veil when we surrender our distorted narratives— and in that surrender, the values of Christ begin to produce the fruit of the Spirit —bringing forward our true identity in Him. I can’t thank Jesus enough for saving us from the distorted identities we were never meant to carry. He truly is the way, the truth, and the life— the one who tore the veilso we could receive the gift of the Holy Spirit— and remember —we are made in His image ✨ #haleydkelly #HaleyKellyReflections #IdentityInChrist ⸻ 🧠 Neuroscience Layer — The Biology of Distortion & Surrender Human perception is not neutral—it is constructed, filtered, and defended by the brain, especially under threat. Amygdala (Threat Detection) The brain interprets emotional exposure (shame, guilt, vulnerability) as danger. This activates protection patterns: • justify • defend • hide • condemn Not because we want evil— but because the brain is trying to preserve identity. ⸻ Default Mode Network (DMN — Identity Narrative System) The DMN builds your “story of self.” When dysregulated, it creates distortion loops: • “I’m right” → justification • “I’m too far gone” → despair • “They’re the problem” → projection Judas likely entered a loop of identity collapse— where guilt became who he was, not something he did. ⸻ Anterior Cingulate Cortex (Conflict Detector) Detects internal tension: • “I did wrong” vs • “I can still be restored” This tension requires resolution. It will move toward: • truth (repentance) or • distortion (justification or despair) ⸻ Prefrontal Cortex (Alignment + Truth Integration) This is where: • humility • surrender • realignment actually occur. But under emotional overwhelm, it goes offline— which is why slowing down and surrendering is required to access truth. ⸻ Nervous System Regulation & Identity A dysregulated system reinforces distorted thinking. The brain prioritizes relief over truth. So: • Conviction (from the Spirit) → leads to life, repentance, integration • Condemnation (from distortion) → leads to shame, isolation, destruction Peter and Judas both felt sorrow. Only one turned toward truth. ⸻ 📖 Scripture Layer — KJV with Explanation Luke 23:34 (KJV) “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do…” Explanation: Spiritual blindness can feel like certainty. Distortion does not feel like deception—it feels like clarity. ⸻ Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV) “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Explanation: The internal system (thoughts, emotions, perception) is unreliable without God. It will generate convincing—but distorted—realities. ⸻ Proverbs 3:5 (KJV) “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Explanation: Your understanding is shaped by your current state. Truth requires surrender beyond self-perception. ⸻ 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” Explanation: Identity is not self-constructed—it is received. Remaining in shame is often agreement with an identity that no longer exists. ⸻ Hebrews 10:19–20 (KJV) “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;” Explanation: Access to God is no longer blocked. The barrier is not distance—it is distortion. ⸻ 2 Corinthians 7:10 (KJV) “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.” Explanation: Same emotion—different direction: • Toward God → life • Into self → death ⸻ John 14:6 (KJV) “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Explanation: Truth is not something we create internally. Truth is someone we align with. ⸻ 🔑 Integration — The Real Battle The issue is not simply behavior. It is identity. And identity is either: • formed through distorted perception or • aligned through Christ The brain will always try to protect a narrative. But the Spirit calls us to surrender it. Because: Distortion says: “I must defend who I think I am.” Truth says: “I surrender who I think I am to become who He says I am.”
