i read something on my feed about 3 months ago that knocked the wind out of me, and honestly i think it might have saved my life. it was a woman who shared that she is in stage 4 liver failure, waiting for a transplant, in and out of the er. she said her stomach has to be drained regularly because of fluid buildup and that she looks 6 months pregnant. she said even though she has quit drinking her quality of life is terrible. the part that wrecked me was when she said she wishes she had listened when her doctor first told her she had fatty liver. i read it on my phone in bed and then i just laid there staring at the ceiling for probably 20 minutes. because my doctor told me i had fatty liver in january. i had gone in for what i thought was a gallbladder thing and the ultrasound came back clean except the radiologist noted a "mild fatty liver." my dr called and said try to lose 10 lbs, maybe cut back on wine, come back in 6 months. that was the whole call. i was kind of annoyed more than anything, didnt have time to add something new to my list and figured if she wasnt worried i didnt need to be either. didnt research what fatty liver actually is or where it goes if you do nothing. didnt change much. kept drinking my 4-5 glasses of wine a week. then i read that womans post and something just clicked. i am 51. i could be her in 15 years if i keep doing what i was doing. so im writing this for the person who needs to read it the way i needed to read hers. first thing i did was cut alcohol. almost completely. i have had maybe 2 glasses in 3 months and im not going back. that was the thing i was most resistant to and her post was what finally made me do it. i also changed how i eat. nothing crazy, not keto. cut soda, cut most bread, cut sugar, cut fried food. eggs for breakfast instead of cereal. more vegetables with dinner. im down 11 lbs so far without really trying. i walk 30-40 min a day now. wasnt doing that before at all. and im taking a milk thistle supplement. i had tried milk thistle a few years ago from walmart and it did absolutely nothing so i almost didnt bother with this. but i kept reading that most of what you buy at the drugstore is too low purity to actually reach your liver, so i went looking for one with a real studied dose, not the cheap stuff. the one i ended up on is called Happy Liver from a company called Ritual Labs. im still wrapping my head around what its actually doing but ill try to explain the parts i understood. it has the silymarin (the active part of milk thistle) at a strength thats actually been studied to get into liver cells and protect them from further damage, which is basically the part that matters when your liver is already stressed. but the part i found more interesting is that it also has inositol in it. i had never heard of inositol before. apparently your liver stores fat inside the organ itself, not around it like belly fat, actually packed into the liver tissue. thats what fatty liver literally is. your liver got too full of fat to do its other jobs properly. inositol is the thing that helps the liver push that stored fat back out so it can function again. that was the part that made me go ok this is why diet alone doesnt always do it, because even when you stop putting new fat in, the fat thats already sitting in the liver needs help getting back out. 2 capsules in the morning with my coffee. thats the whole thing. heres what i can tell you from the last 3 months. i wake up and my face is not puffy anymore. i didnt even realize how puffy id been waking up until i stopped, my husband was the one who pointed it out. the pressure under my right ribs that id had for probably a year and just chalked up to me being bloated, gone. i have not had to unbutton my pants after dinner in weeks, and that used to happen most nights. my energy in the afternoon is different, i dont hit that 3pm wall anymore where i basically need to lay down. and my rings fit again, i had taken them off around christmas because my fingers were too swollen to get them off easily. no new bloodwork yet, i go back in a couple weeks. i dont know what the numbers will show. but my body feels different in a way it has not felt in years and im taking that as a sign. even if my labs dont move as much as i want, im not going back to how i was living before. that woman's post made it too real. im writing this because nobody explained any of this to me when i got diagnosed. no dr ever sat me down and said this is where this goes if you ignore it. i would have kept ignoring it myself if i hadnt randomly seen a post from a woman whose life is falling apart because her doctor gave her the same shrug mine gave me. if someone told you you have fatty liver and your doctor basically waved it off, please take it seriously. you dont have to do exactly what im doing. but do something. sending so much love to the woman who shared her story. i hope she gets her transplant. she saved my life without ever knowing she did ❤️ link to the one im taking is below if anyone wants to look at it: https://rituallabs.shop/products/happy-liver
