UPDATE: 10 weeks on normal food with hypothyroidism. I have good news. A lot of you have been asking me to come back and update what happened. So here it is… ======== First - thank you to everyone who commented on my original post. Seriously. I was losing my mind and you all made me feel like I wasn't crazy. So many of you were in the exact same trap. The "I'm doing everything my doctor says but my body keeps getting worse" trap. Yeah. That one. ======== Quick background for anyone new: My name is Sarah and I have hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's). For 4 years I took my Levothyroxine every single morning. Never missed a day. Set an alarm. Same time. Every morning. Did everything they told me to do. Tracked every calorie in MyFitnessPal. Started at 1,500 calories. Then 1,200. Then 1,000. Some days I'd get down to 800 calories out of pure desperation. And I kept gaining weight anyway. ======== My doctor kept telling me my TSH was normal. Meanwhile I'm watching my face get puffy. My jeans stop fitting. The scale going up 2-3 pounds every week eating almost nothing. And my doctor would look at me like I'm lying. Like I'm secretly eating entire pizzas at night and just not telling her. 4 years of that. ======== The worst part? I started believing her. Maybe I AM lying to myself. Maybe I'm miscounting calories. Maybe I'm eating in my sleep and don't remember. Maybe I'm just broken and this is who I am now. I cried in her office when she said "You just need to eat less and move more." I WAS eating less. I was starving myself. And my body was doing the OPPOSITE. ======== So I cut calories even lower. 900 some days. Black coffee for breakfast. Salad with no dressing for lunch. Tiny piece of chicken and vegetables for dinner. Still gaining. The math didn't make sense. Nothing made sense. ======== And I was exhausted. God. The exhaustion. Sleeping 10 hours and waking up like I hadn't slept at all. By 2pm I couldn't keep my eyes open. Brain fog so bad I'd forget words mid-sentence. Freezing cold all the time. Sweaters in July. Hair falling out in clumps. ======== But my TSH was "normal." So I was fine. Just needed to try harder. 4 years of hell. ======== Then I made a post in r/Hashimotos. Desperate. Last attempt. "Is anyone else taking their Levothyroxine perfectly but still gaining weight? What am I doing wrong?" And oh my god, the comments. ======== "Yeah, same. I've gained 50 pounds on medication." "My TSH is 'normal' but I feel terrible." "Doctors don't believe me either." "I've accepted this is just my life now." ======== But then I went down a rabbit hole. In the threads where hypothyroid women actually TALK. Not the medical forums where doctors give generic advice. The real ones. Where women are posting at 2am because nothing's working and they don't know what else to do. And I found this thread. A woman asking the exact same question I asked. "Why am I gaining weight when my TSH is normal?" Most comments were doom and gloom. But there was one comment that stopped me cold. ======== Someone who said she was a functional medicine doctor. Dr. Rachel Thompson. 11 years of practice. And she had hypothyroidism too. She LIVED this. And she explained WHY this happens. Why you can take your medication perfectly and still gain weight. Why your TSH looks "normal" but you feel like you're dying. And what she said next made me sick. ======== She said Levothyroxine doesn't fix the actual problem. It gives you T4 - the inactive hormone. Your body is SUPPOSED to convert that T4 into T3 - the ACTIVE hormone that actually burns fat. T3 is the key that unlocks your metabolism. But when you have hypothyroidism and you've been starving yourself for years trying to lose weight... Your body stops making real keys. It starts making broken ones instead. Reverse T3. ======== She explained it like this. Your body has these locks. When they open, you burn calories. T3 is the key that opens them. But when you've been eating 800 calories for months... When you've been dieting for YEARS... Your body thinks you're in danger. So it panics. Stops making real keys. Starts making broken keys instead. Reverse T3. ======== The broken keys look exactly like real keys. They slide right into the lock. But they don't turn. They just jam. Get stuck. And now the real keys can't even get in. Nothing opens. Nothing burns. No matter how little you eat. No matter how perfectly you take your medication. ======== And your TSH can look totally normal the whole time. Because TSH just tells you keys are being made. It doesn't tell you if they're BROKEN. Or if your locks are JAMMED SHUT. ======== And here's the part that made me physically sick. Every time I cut calories lower. Every time I dropped from 1,500 to 1,200 to 1,000 to 800. Every time I tried HARDER. My body thought I was starving. So it panicked harder. Made MORE broken keys. Jammed my locks even TIGHTER. I was making it worse. For 4 years. Torturing myself for nothing. ======== I read that and just... sat there. Because it explained EVERYTHING. Why I gained weight eating nothing. Why my medication "wasn't working." Why my body did the opposite of what it should. My locks were jammed the whole time. And nobody checked. Nobody tested for Reverse T3. They just looked at my TSH and said "you're fine." ======== So I asked in the thread. "Okay then what actually clears the jam?" ======== She said selenium and iodine in a specific ratio. 2 to 1. To clear the broken keys that are stuck and help your body make real ones again. And this specific form of ashwagandha called KSM-66 to calm the stress response so your body stops producing more broken keys. All in liquid form because with hypothyroidism our guts are damaged and pills don't absorb right. ======== Now. Ashwagandha. I almost scrolled past when I saw that. Because I've seen posts saying it's bad for your thyroid. My doctor told me to avoid it. ======== But apparently the random stuff on Amazon with inconsistent dosing? Yeah. That can mess with your thyroid. That's why doctors say avoid it. Easier than explaining the nuance. ======== But KSM-66. Clinical grade. The exact dose that's actually been studied? That's different. That actually calms the stress response. Stops the panic signal. Stops your body from making broken keys. ======== Someone in the thread replied with a link. Said she'd been on Levothyroxine for 6 years. Gained 55 pounds despite "normal TSH." Found this. Down 19 pounds in 12 weeks eating 1,700 calories. SEVENTEEN HUNDRED. She used to gain on 1,200. Another woman posted her labs. Reverse T3 went from elevated to normal range in 8 weeks. Someone else: "First time my body has responded to ANYTHING in 3 years." I kept scrolling and it was like... woman after woman saying the same thing. "It finally worked." "The scale went down." "I can eat normal food again." ======== I looked at the formula. Selenium. Iodine. 2 to 1 ratio. KSM-66 ashwagandha. Liquid. $35. I'd spent thousands on failed diets. Meal plans that didn't work. Supplements that did nothing. What was $35. And it had a 60-day guarantee. If it didn't work I'd get my money back. Ordered it that night. ======== I'm not gonna lie. I was skeptical. I'd tried everything. Why would this be different? But I had nothing left to lose. ======== Week 1. Kept waiting for something to happen. Nothing really changed. Scale stayed the same. Told myself don't get your hopes up. You've been disappointed too many times. ======== Week 2. This is usually when I'd start gaining. Like my body would "remember" I was eating more than 800 calories and punish me. But it... didn't? I stepped on the scale expecting the worst. Same weight. I weighed myself three times. Thought the scale was broken. ======== Week 3. This is when I noticed something. I woke up and I wasn't exhausted. Like I actually WANTED to get out of bed. I used to set 3 alarms. Snooze all of them. Drag myself up feeling like I hadn't slept at all. Now I was waking up before my alarm. That sounds small but if you know you know. It was the first sign something was actually changing. ======== Week 4. Down 3.2 pounds. I weighed myself four times. Didn't trust it. Last time I ate 1,500 calories I GAINED. Now I'm DOWN? My body was finally doing what it's supposed to do. Eat less = weigh less. It made SENSE again. ======== Week 6. Down 7 pounds total. I was eating 1,700 calories now. Not 1,000. Not 800. 1,700. And losing. My husband asked what I was doing different. I told him about the supplement. He didn't believe me. Thought I secretly went back on some extreme diet. But I was eating MORE than before. And losing. ======== Week 8. I made an appointment with my doctor. Told her I wanted full thyroid labs. Including Reverse T3. She looked at me like I was crazy. "Your TSH is fine. You don't need that test." I insisted. Had to advocate for myself. Again. ======== Got the results back a week later. Reverse T3 was normal. For the first time in years. I sat in my car in the parking lot and cried. Not cute crying. Ugly crying. Because it wasn't just the number. It was what it MEANT. All those years of doctors telling me to just try harder. Eat less. Move more. Stop making excuses. All those times I believed them. Believed it was my fault. It was never my fault. My locks were jammed the whole time. And nobody checked. Nobody tested the right thing. They just looked at TSH and sent me home. ======== Week 10. Down 11.4 pounds total. Eating 1,800 calories. I used to GAIN on 1,200. Now I'm losing on 1,800. My jeans fit again. My face isn't puffy anymore. I have energy for my kids after work. I'm not freezing cold all the time. My hair stopped falling out. I look in the mirror and I see MY face. Not some swollen stranger. ======== To my endocrinologist who told me my TSH was "fine" for 4 years while I gained 47 pounds — you were wrong. To everyone who said "your medication is working, you just need to eat less" — that wasn't the problem. ======== I don't know if this works for everyone. I'm not a doctor. I'm just telling you what happened to me. If you're taking your medication perfectly right now... If you're eating 1,200 calories and the scale only goes UP... If your doctor keeps saying your labs are "normal" but you feel terrible... You're not crazy. Your locks are jammed. And your doctor isn't testing for it. ======== Here's the link if you want to try it. 👉 https://try-innerfresh.com/products/thyroid They have a 60 day guarantee so if it doesn't work you get your money back. That's honestly the only reason I tried it. I was so done wasting money on things that didn't work. Also heads up they sell out a lot. I had to wait 2 weeks for my second bottle last month. ======== I'll update again at 6 months if people want. But yeah. 10 weeks. Down 11.4 pounds. Eating 1,800 calories. Taking my Levothyroxine every day. My body finally works WITH my medication instead of against it. Still can't believe it.
