Some women begin to notice when warmth has no depth under it. When admiration is easy but reciprocity never arrives. When they are being approached for what they carry, not met for who they are. There is a particular entitlement in this arrangement: the assumption that a woman’s steadiness, insight, support, language, or care is there to be drawn from without any equal movement toward her. Patriarchy trains the eye to value what a woman gives before it learns how to meet the woman herself. Patriarchy does not only teach men to extract. Women can learn it too. How to admire without supporting, approach without meeting, draw from another woman without ever really standing beside her. And because this often touches an older wound — to be chosen, to be wanted, to be picked, then over-giving can start to feel like the price of staying in the room. Not every kind of wanting is a choosing. Some of it is just picking over your bones. This is one of the quieter powers of inner work. A woman stops mistaking selective interest for relation.
