Some women begin to notice the moment the room asks them to leave themselves. The flinch, the tightening, the truth that rises cleanly in the body, and the almost immediate pressure to soften it, edit it, make it easier for the room to handle. They begin to see how often they keep the peace, and how often something in them goes missing. There is a particular arrangement in this: women are often rewarded for becoming easier to handle. The one who tidies her instincts, lowers the temperature, rounds off the truth, makes herself easier to overrule, is often called good. Not because goodness is false, but because women are so often praised where they are least disruptive to other people’s comfort. Patriarchy does not only teach women to be desirable. It teaches them to mistrust themselves when truth arrives without softness. To confuse self-betrayal with grace. To call politeness maturity even when it is cutting them away from their own anger, their own terms, their own clean no. Women can learn this with men, with women, in family, in friendship, in work, anywhere a woman is asked to keep the room easy at her own expense. And because this often touches an older wound, the hope can take hold that if she stays kind enough, careful enough, undemanding enough, she will remain safe in belonging. As though truth endangers belonging. As though self-abandonment is the price of staying. It can take a long time to notice what that arrangement has cost her. Politeness has buried many women alive. This is one of the quieter powers of inner work. A woman begins to feel when the cost of staying good has become too high. She stops calling self-betrayal grace.
