Did you know? The bullied child becomes the patient. The bully gets another warning. That should make every parent angry. Too often, the child being tormented is the one who ends up in therapy. The child who cannot sleep. The child with stomachaches before school. The child whose grades drop. The child who stops wanting to go to school. And the child is told to be resilient while the bully learns that consequences are optional. Bullying is not drama. Bullying is not kids being kids. Bullying is repeated aggression with a power imbalance. And when adults minimize it, children internalize it. They start thinking: Maybe I deserve this. Maybe something is wrong with me. Maybe no one is coming. That is where psychiatry gets involved. AACAP notes that bullied children can experience real suffering that affects emotional development, social development, and school performance. CDC links bullying with depression, anxiety, sleep problems, lower academic achievement, self-harm, and even death. A large meta-analysis found bullied children have higher odds of depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, and self-injury. Clinical takeaways: 1. The symptom may be the alarm. School refusal, stomachaches, sleep problems, falling grades, and shutdown are not always defiance. Sometimes they are a nervous system saying: I am not safe here. 2. The burden should not fall on the target. A safety plan that protects the school's reputation more than the child's safety is not a safety plan. It is liability management. 3. Do not call trauma a conflict. The bullied child needs protection, documentation, intervention, and repair. Not another poster. Not another assembly. Not another empty reminder to be kind. When a child keeps breaking down after school, ask what happened to them there, not just what is wrong with them.
