It was actually the 5th dinosaur story I’d written in a series of mostly stand-alone books. I’ve always loved Edgar Rice Burroughs and wanted to do something which reflected his books in my own style. I had a problem of when to set the stories: past, present or future? Past seemed silly (people going back in time limits the stories). Present would have to be either a) characters find a lost world of hidden dinosaurs (not realistic when Earth is mapped now) or b) science brings them back to life (which is just Jurassic Park). So I went for the future. I made up a backstory of the human race having conquered each planetary system. Jupiter has a lot of moons and I love Jupiter, so I set it on a moon someone artificially pieced together and called Ceres (named after the large asteroid). The world was then seeded with dinosaurs (no one ever revealed how) and quarantined. Life on the other moons continues the same way life in other countries would, with most people not knowing or caring about Ceres. Almost everyone thinks the dinosaurs aren’t real and it’s a government training ground or something. (Same as if someone told you, “By the way, there’s an island off the coast of Australia with dinosaurs but it’s quarantined, so don’t worry about it.” No one would believe it.) I have no aliens, I have no ray guns. Everyone acts the way they do today, with a few leniencies if I need them (I had a rocket pack once). With the premise set, it meant I could do as many stand-alone stories as I wanted. All I had to do each time was think “why would someone visit a quarantined dinosaur world?” Each time I had an answer, I wrote a new book. So one character is searching for the cure for cancer, another has been tied naked to a tree on a stag do, a married couple go on a make-or-break weekend. I ended up having some of the stories connected (there’s a list in each book to explain which are part of the “prison” series), but even those can be read without the others. They’re all the ones based around a prison set up on the dinosaur world where the prisoners overran the place but were still stuck on the world. I haven’t written a new dinosaur book in a while, but it did allow me to world build. I began working out what other moons of Jupiter were like and it led to a 12-book spin-off called Jupiter’s Glory, which then led to other books like Mai, Ananke’s Knight War, Fire of the Heart and others. From there, I worked out what was happening in other planetary systems (e.g. Sleigh Ride Slaughter to Saturn) at the same time, which spread out my game. The dinosaur books which I wrote purely for fun turned into something major for my writing because it’s easy to write a book in the future now as the set-up is all there. Anyway, I’ve waffled enough. This book is a collection of 4 dinosaur stories (the first 2 Prison World and 2 others). Thanks for anyone who reads them. And yes, Burroughs is still the king of dinosaur pulp.
