Ecotourism is the most important part of bird conservation in PNG, especially when PNG is such a poor country with little money from government to support conservation work, hardly any national parks in the country as 99% of lands owned privately by many local tribes. Almost every bird is regarded as game birds in New Guinea, it’s vital we can change as many locals attitude towards birds, the most effective way is that if we bring many tourists to PNG, make more and more locals benefit from birding tourism, they will cherish birds with their families too, such a great example is Costa Rica which ecotourism became very important part of the country economy and jobs employment, local people for example stopped eating tree iguanas long time ago as they realised tourists enjoy watching iguanas. Over the past 8 years I have worked in bird photography in New Guinea, scouting and even helping local tour operators to establish some good birding spots for top notch photography experience, I would like to recommend those three tour operators that proved they can work with me and more more bird photographers to produce good quality photos with best possible experience. I think bird of paradise and bowerbirds species should be the flagship species for New Guinea bird conservation, they are endemic to New Guinea and extremely photogenic, every birders love to see them.
