The scaly ground roller (Geobiastes squamiger) is a secretive and little-known bird found only in the humid forests of northeastern Madagascar. It belongs to the ground roller family (Brachypteraciidae), a group of unique, terrestrial rollers that are restricted to Madagascar. It has dark brown plumage with bold whitish scalloping on the underparts, giving it a “scaly” look. Its large head, stout bill, and strong legs are adapted to a terrestrial lifestyle. It is about 25–28 cm (10–11 in) long. True to its name, it spends much of its time on or near the forest floor, where it forages quietly for insects, small reptiles, and other invertebrates. Known for its low, mournful whistles that often reveal its presence, as it is otherwise extremely shy and hard to spot. Found in lowland and mid-elevation rainforests of northeastern Madagascar, undisturbed forest understory, making it particularly vulnerable to habitat disturbance. Classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN. Primary threats include deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and slash-and-burn agriculture. Numbers are believed to be declining.
